Fashion Bloggers Guide to Shopping: Style Sequel

Fashion Bloggers starts a new series of interviews: Fashion Bloggers Guide to Shopping, read our interview with Emma of Style Sequel.

Charlotte: Tell our readers how Style Sequel started
Emma: I have always loved beautiful clothes and have been an avid pre-owned shopper myself for as long as I can remember. Around 5 years ago I decided to turn my passion into a business and I started selling second hand designer clothing online - firstly for my super stylish friends, then their friends etc.. As I result I built up an amazing list of sellers and buyers around the world and I started to feel that there was a need for a truly specialist designer re-selling platform which delivered a high level of knowledge, care and service given to both sellers and buyers. I really want the experience of selling second hand clothing via Style Sequel to be as easy and simple as possible for our sellers and also as much of a pleasure for our buyers as buying a brand new item would be.

Charlotte: What does vintage mean to you?
Emma: My passion focuses more on contemporary pre-owned fashion - pieces from last season or a few seasons ago. I like to call it 'second chance style' i.e. pieces that don't have the age to be classed as vintage but which sit in their own very special category of desirability. A great example would be the many pieces of very collectible Tom Ford for Gucci we have sold. These all date to the late 90s and early 00s, so for me are not true vintage but are rather ‘contemporary vintage’. Another example would be rare, sold out bags and shoes - such as the super Balenciaga 'Aviator Helmet' bag from 2004 which we currently have for sale or the sold out Prada brothel creeper brogues which we sold recently.

Charlotte: Can you remember the first vintage piece you ever owned?
Emma: My first 'second chance style' buy, and I suppose the piece that really kick-started my passion is my stunning Balenciaga 'parachute' bag from 2003. I have had so many offers from people to buy it from me but I'll never part with it. It means so much to me as I, in some small part, owe my current business to it.

Charlotte: What makes Style Sequel different from other fashion websites?
Emma: One of the key things is that everything we sell is a one off - we only sell pieces that were desirable the first time around and that we feel still are now. We work really hard to do every piece we sell justice, to give it personality and context. Our top seller profiles, from our Laid Back Stylista to our Polished Parisian, give our buyers the chance to get inside some of the most wonderful wardrobes from around the world.
We use our extensive knowledge to hand select the best pieces from these wardrobes so we can offer our buyers a wonderful selection, not just from established brands such as Chanel and Hermes, but also from smaller or more ‘niche’ labels such as Carolina Bucci or Comme Des Garcons. We also love to give our buyers as much information as possible, highlighting items that are ‘Style Icons’, ‘Collectibles’, ‘Limited Editions’ alongside my own ‘Editor’s Picks’. And we add fabulous second hand designer pieces to our site every single day, so each time people visit there will be something different to see.

Charlotte: What are your favourite pieces in your wardrobe?
Emma: Apart from my Balenciaga parachute bag I have a gorgeous navy tweed mid 1980s Chanel jacket which I wear with everything from jeans to evening dresses. Also I love my pair of classic Camilla Skovgaard black booties with her signature tread sole - they look amazing with everything too.

Charlotte: What advice would you give them whilst purchasing a Vintage item or clothing?
Emma: I did a great blog post on this recently. My top ten tips for buying second hand designer fashion. I guess the one I live by most myself is “enjoy the chase. Once you do snag your first amazing piece you’ll be hooked.”

Charlotte: Your first thought in the morning?
Emma: What amazing people and clothes am I going to have the honour of dealing with today? And, I hope we have some coffee in the pot.

Charlotte: Give us some tips to find our personal style.
Emma: For me it’s simply about loving everything you wear and not worrying about shopping seasonally or following trends. I am not ‘practical’ shopper – I buy things because I love them, not because they go with 10 other things in my wardrobe. I’m also a firm believer in quality over quantity. I’d rather have one piece that makes me feel amazing every time I wear it and that will last forever than 10 items that are just ok and that will only last a few wears.
